Type any word and the Navigator counts it honestly: בְּרֵאשִׁית appears exactly once in the whole Torah. Flip the toggle to Root, and its family — רֵאשִׁית, "beginning" — answers 18 times. Two questions, two true answers. (The walking-verb הָלַךְ in Root mode? 317.)

Every word sharing your word's number, gathered in one panel. בְּרֵאשִׁית is 913 — ten words in the Torah answer it, among them וְאֶת־הָרֹאשׁ, "and the head." Click any match to hunt it through the text.

FAQ

Common questions

What is gematria?

Every Hebrew letter has a numerical value — א is 1, ב is 2, up to ת at 400 — so every word has a total. Comparing words that share a total is a study method as old as the Talmud. This site computes the numbers instantly, for every word, under fifteen different calculation systems; what they mean is your study, not ours.

What's free, and what does Premium add?

Reading is free forever: the complete Torah in Hebrew and English, every word's letters and values on tap, no account needed. Free accounts also get 3 lookups a day — a lookup is a root search, a value search, or a "find every occurrence." Premium removes the limit entirely and includes new translations as they're added.

Which Hebrew text and translation do you use?

The Hebrew is the Masoretic text with full nikkud. The English is the 1917 Jewish Publication Society translation, complete and in the public domain. French is next.

Where do the root connections come from?

From the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible project's word-by-word tagging of the Torah against Strong's lexicon — the same open scholarly data used by academic tools. Every count here is checkable, verse by verse.
